Music Video Review | Maroon 5 - Animals

Maroon 5
Animals - Single
Interscope
Release date: August 22, 2014 (Single) / September 29, 2014 (Music Video)

Yay it's Halloween already! Oh wait, false alarm. It's just the trailer for Maroon 5's new horror film. Wait a minute. I mean the music video for their latest single, 'Animals'.

Maroon 5 is well-known for their risqué music videos but this one has to take the cake for being the best (albeit subjective) MV so far for being creative, captivating and outright creepy at the same time. Directed by Samuel Bayer of A Nightmare on Elm Street fame, the scarefest stars Adam Levine (naturally, as the frontman) as a lowly nerdy butcher who also doubles as a stalker, following around a neighbourhood lass while developing photos of her in his darkroom and fantasising about having sex with her in a rain of blood. The plot is also interwoven with scenes of Adam cutting into pieces of meat and bathing himself in more blood, because of course.

Featuring his new bride, Namibian looker Behati Prinsloo of Victoria's Secret as the victim, Adam Levine seems to have taken this opportunity to go all out on the lovemaking scenes. Sidebar: The first part when she enters the store could not help but bring to mind the scene of Claudia Schiffer entering the deli in Westlife's 'Uptown Girl'. She's no Schiffer but she's almost there. Speaking of supermodels, Adam's previous Victorian love, Anne V also had a main role in the video of Maroon 5's 'Misery'. Well at least he's using them better than some people out there. Read: Nick Jonas

All in all, creeping into cinemas near you very soon. Hold on, I mean an apt video for a sinister single.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

  1. I totally agree! I was actually like 'I don't know if this is sexy or scary' the WHOLE TIME I was watching it. The blood looked pretty fake though, so that was kinda a turn-off for me. That scene where the chick rejects him in the club though- so sad, but STORY OF MY LIFE!
