The last ten months have been all about Taylor Swift’s 1989 and no pop record has gone to her goliath standard in the last few years. Coming close is Carly Rae Jepsen’s effort to leave her “one hit wonder” status, E•MO•TION, a well-engineered pop record of the year.
Let’s be honest, her last two albums are not memorable at all (two? My thought exactly!). After achieving success with ‘Call Me Maybe’ in 2011, I have no idea where she’s at and singles that followed the monstrous hit is nothing but forgettable.
Then came ‘I Really Like You’, a highly likeable pop song that carries such a simple and easy message, even your grandma is smiling while listening to it.
Anyway, I got a chance to listen to her album and I have to agree with most critics, E•MO•TION is definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. All 12 tracks are polished to perfection and I do think most of the songs here can easily be picked as her next single.
Other than the first single, some of my favs are ‘Warm Blood’, ‘Run Away With Me', ‘E•MO•TION’ (this one is ridiculously catchy), ‘Let’s Get Lost’, and uptempo bangers like 'LA Hallucinations', ‘Boy Problems’, ‘Your Type’, and ‘Making the Most of the Night’.
Jepsen’s personality didn’t shine through this LP like Swift’s in 1989 but still, E•MO•TION evokes that 80’s synth-pop I’ve been dreading for a while and I’m glad she’s releasing this at the right time.
FYI, Carly's comeback LP will be released on August 21 via 604 / School Boy / Interscope. Preorder available here.
