Music Video Review | Sam Smith - Like I Can

Sam Smith
Like I Can - Single
Capitol / Method
Release date: December 5, 2014 (Single) / December 12, 2014 (Music Video)

It was just about time before Sam Smith went cinematic, which he finally did via another heart-breaking tearjerker.

Albeit starting off with an uptempo guitar rift which leads to a boisterous chorus, one does not need to stray far from the lyrics to know the emotional depth of the song. Another melancholic offering designed through prolonged sadness, 'Like I Can' deals with the despair and loss one feels looking at a loved one falling for another.

The black and white video however is not as frank as the singer's sorrow. Set in New York City, the video features the bittersweet crooner and 20 other men all dressed up in smart suits designed by Calvin Klein as they go wandering around the city, climbing up fire escapes, dancing on the Brooklyn Bridge (blink and you'll miss it) and downing shots. Possibly showcasing the loneliness of a member of a groom's party during a Stags' Day Out, the video also shows one of the men in the group delivering flowers to someone in a flat, possibly alluding to the groom's would-be being the loner's love interest.

UPDATE: Sam Smith is officially dating one of the 20 extras that made up the posse. Way to go Sam!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
