Single Review | MKTO - Classic

MKTO
Classic - Single
Columbia
Release date: June 20, 2013

The song may be over a year old, but it's one of the heaviest played tracks on the radio right now because, well, it's 'Classic'.

Normally I don't get too personal with what I write here but this time I can't help but reveal: This is my (current) jam! Another sonic gold by MKTO following their youth anthem 'Thank You', the song pays homage to all of the suave hitmakers of the yesteryears through the spectacular lyrics (save for BeyoncĂ© who as timeless as she is doesn't quite fit between Hepburn and Marilyn) and somewhat grandiose treatment to the music with the use of a myriad of instruments.

The song namedrops some of the biggest names in music history such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra and Donny Hathaway (no relation to Anne Hathaway) while referencing some of the attributes generally associated with being a gentleman in the past. Tony Oller's smooth vocals take us through the catchy song right until the end, leaving us singing along to his imaginary voice in our heads even after the song ends (or does that happen only to me?) as Malcolm Kelley adds the extra punch to the number with his rapping. And who could forget Derek Hough and Jessica Lee Keller lending the tune an explosive routine to go with it.

The song joins a recent list of songs that sound like a blast from the past like Ariana Grande's haunting 'Problem' and Jessie J's audio orgy 'Bang Bang'. To quote MKTO, “Everything is so throwback-ish”.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
