Music Video Review | Rita Ora - I Will Never Let You Down

Rita Ora
I Will Never Let You Down - Single
Roc Nation / Columbia
Release date: March 31, 2014 (Single / Music Video)

Fashion brand darling Rita Ora's latest ode is a befitting tribute to all her industry backers and fans; but does her video do the sweet song justice? Let's find out.

The answer is yes and no. A honest track in which Rita pours her heart out, the lyrics are not just catchy but so assuring that you latch on to her promise to “never let you down”. The verses tell a story of how no matter how over-worked she is, when you are in need of a shoulder to lean on or to have fun with, she'll be there for you.

Now, with the issues we have. The song is pretty self-referential; it is after all about Rita Ora not disappointing people. The problem, however, is the fact that the video's director took the easy way out and made the video all about her – with countless closeups. So instead of appearing as this concerned pop artist, she comes off self-centred and it really hurts to have to say that. An alternative way that would have been way better would be to just have a small story in the video of her and another man at least.

On the other hand, putting aside the message of the song, the video is most definitely fun! A combination of B&W shots with colourful outfits and easy dance moves, the visual treat even features Rita with a shorter haircut which definitely suits her. It also reminds of a few other videos such as Kiesza's 'Hideaway' for the eerily similar pavement where both artists dance and Christina Aguilera's 'Your Body' for the colour scheme. Brownie points for featuring twin dancers Polly and Sophie Duniam and the darkroom photo film start.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
