Music Review | Ariana Grande - Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)

Ariana Grande
Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea) - Single
Republic
Release date: April 28, 2014 (Single) / May 30, 2014 (Music Video)

We’ve got a problem with Ariana Grande’s 'Problem'.

Staying true to the tune of the song, the video oozes the retro vibe of the 60s, with Baby Mariah shimming in knee-high go-go boots and a shiny shift dress while Australian rap goddess Iggy Azalea sports a voluptuous big blonde hair while rocking a skin tight bodysuit. In the background the pinwheel go-go filters from the lyric video makes an appearance again, this time enhanced with the help of Miss Grande’s gaggle of gay friends, oops scratch that we mean her talented backup dancers.

And that’s where the problem lies. The video is completely underwhelming in comparison to the pizzaz of the song! We understand the song is essentially about the nonchalance of a powerful young woman who couldn’t give a damn about a douchebag but boy does Adriana take the cake for ‘couldn’t care less’. She just mouths her way through the entire song without putting much soul and spirit into it and it comes out clearly through our iMac screens. All it looks like is a group of friends having fun celebrating their friend’s breakup.

Well, that could have been the intention after all. And if that was what Team Ariana had been aiming for, then kudos for perfectly achieving just that.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.
