Music Video Review | Shakira - Dare (La La La)

Shakira
Dare (La La La) - Single
RCA
Release date: March 25, 2014 (Single) / May 7, 2014 (Music Video)

We dare you to detest Shakira's latest single 'Dare (La La La)'. If you dare that is. Hating on its video, however, is completely okay with us and here's why.

To put it as succinct as possible – it's boring! Featuring only the songstress prominently over half of the video proving to us, quite eccentrically, that her hips still don't lie rather than using more backup dancers, the MV proves to be a disappointment for expectant fans (case in point: yours truly). Even Shakira's golden power of presence and the 'Empire'-sque locations employed are unable to elevate the visuals of the video to match the anthemic quality of the stadium-thumper, which was instead marred by distracting overlays of Samba dancers to acknowledge the song's Brazilian beat.

A bit of history, the riling 'Dare (La La La)' was recorded somewhere between 2011 and 2012, while its video, yes this very exact video, was shot way back in mid-June of 2012 (gasp). The shooting took place in Portugal and numerous images of the songstress on set were uploaded to the internet, piquing the interest for Shakira's new studio effort at that time - which of course didn't drop until two years later (no) thanks to Gerard Pique, the baby daddy to her little boy Milan.

A variation of the uplifting number complete with a Portuguese intro by Carlinhos Brown and football references has been selected to be the secondary theme song for World Cup 2014 in Brazil later this year, somewhat repeating the streak she started with the epic monstrosity that was 'Hips Don't Lie' for World Cup 2010.

Come on Shakira we dare you to make a new video for the song. Whatcha waiting for? Leggo.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars.
