Music Video Review | Nicole Scherzinger - Run

Nicole Scherzinger
Run - Single
Sony Music
Release date: September 30, 2014 (Single) / November 13, 2014 (Music Video)

Nicole goes melancholic – the really sad kind, not the touching yourself kind – for her heart-wrencher 'Run'.

For once, the once-staple princess of the judge chairs on reality TV shows, does not writhe around half-naked in some exotic location for her MV. Instead, she dials it back a few notches to bare her soul instead. Shot in an exquisite mansion that boasts impressive architecture, Nicole is filmed in various positions inside the edifice, including running in the hallways and lying down on a blank sheet in a large carpeted-hall (my favourite).

The best part of the video is definitely the songstress herself. Appearing completely stripped down – without makeup and only in a slip – she gets her grief on, perfectly matching the emotions and vulnerability that makes the track special. The understated video captures Nicole keeping it raw and real while emoting to the camera, all the while making it seem effortless and subtle to keep the attention on the powerhouse vocals.

Spoiler alert!

The MV's final touch, where a heart-broken and soul-shattered Nicole is revealed to be singing the song about warning another on the perils of a man to herself (gasp!), makes the whole visual that much more impactful.

p/s: The nails have got to go boo.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
