Foals
Hummer - Single
Transgressive
Release date: March 12, 2007
To merely say that we’re still reeling
from Foals’ incredible concert two weeks ago will undeniably be the
understatement of the year. The prodigious English band almost brought the
house (i.e. Upfront) down as the place was filled to the brim with both diehard
fans and curious souls who came to see what the real deal is with this group
named after baby horses. Their electrifying and energetic performance filled
the arena with their distinct euphoric sound of rock, techno and funk.
One of the most significant tracks by
Foals is none than the indecipherable ‘Hummer’ – the song with a title that
does not appear in its lyrics at all. A favourite among fans since the
beginning, it gained mainstream acclaim when it was featured in a phenomenal
drug-fuelled rave in the controversial British TV series Skins, instantly
elevating the scene and the show in general to an unforgettable rank in the
history of television.
A math rock and dance punk infused
track, ‘Hummer’ is not heavy on the ears of a non-rock listener while being
repetitive enough to be instantly catchy. Although the song was initially
released as a non-album single, its fiery reception immediately cemented its
position in the later editions of the Foals’ debut album Antidotes.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
