This Mother's Day, J. Lo timely dropped the music video for her latest single 'Ain't Your Mama.'
Touted as an empowering female anthem, the track is from Lopez's upcoming ninth studio album and is written by an arsenal of songwriters, including Meghan Trainor and Lunchmoney Lewis. Ironically, however, the song's chorus seems to stereotype mothers into a box of domestic duties. Well you be the judge of the song's message.
On the other hand, the music video for the single is what we're really here to talk about. The emvee starts with a newscaster Jenny from the Block being dumped by her lover and she rushes in the rain to her studio. There, instead of reading the news, she calls to arm all women watching to leave behind the patriarchal notions of female responsibilities and be in charge of their own lives.
What follows are scenes depicting Lopez as women from various eras who break free from their shackles, including a Rosie the Riveter-type factory worker, a dutiful 1950's housewife, a Mad Men-style secretary and an 80's businesswoman. The video also incorporates a powerful speech delivered by Hillary Clinton in Beijing in 1995 on women's rights and the oration comes at a time when Hillary is off to battle with misogynist Trump and industry women call for equal wage.
What a timely release indeed!
P/s: In the customary dance sequence that we look forward to in any J. Lo video, she appears in Rihanna for Manolo Blahnik thigh high boots matched with a white bodysuit that honestly makes the whole thing look weird. What do u think? Let us know in the comments section!
