Music Video Review | Years & Years - Desire

Years & Years
Desire - Single
Polydor
Release date: November 23, 2014 (Single) / November 4, 2014 (Music Video)

British singers and bands never cease to amaze you with their sound and visuals in a way never done by their American counterparts.

Years & Years, an English electro-pop trio that have slowly emerged to prominence, have released the MV for their latest single, 'Desire'. The music video provides the perfect backdrop for the lyrics of the song, in which the singer is conflicted of his feelings – whether they are mere desire or real love.

The message behind the song is conveyed in four different scenarios, one where A pair of Asian parents are scolding their hip-hop-loving son (a little stereotypical there), a crushed woman after being raped, an aged man with a geisha exotic dancer (what's up with the Asian obsession here?) and a couple passionately engaged in copulation.

Throughout the video, the lead singer Olly Alexander puts his acting chops to good use (having appeared in Skins and Penny Dreadful in the past), as he seductively and mysteriously looks at the camera while typing with his typewriter: “I desire the things that will destroy me in the end.” Wow.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
