Exclusive | Bastille

By Shawal Ras

It's true to say that Bastille is the biggest upcoming band from Britain: their recently announced UK tour sold out within hours, their hit single 'Pompeii' has become one of the stand out tracks of the year with over half a million sales to date (and over 40 million YouTube views) and their debut album, Bad Blood, has sold nearly half a million copies in UK alone!

The band's unique style of pop music, built from beeps, blips and beats, will renew your (and our) faith in liberty, equality and the craft of song writing.

Dan Smith, one-fourth of the band, explains that their album was created with a cinematic aspect to it, "producing the record, I wanted to off-set epic sounding instrumentation with lyrics that combine intimate stories or conversation. The contrast was something that appealed to me."

Furthermore, he explains, "(we) approached each song differently. I wanted each to be its own story with its own atmosphere which brings in different sounds and elements of production, incorporating aspects of different genres and styles that I love: hip hop, indie, pop and folk."

The smash hit of their debut album caught them off guard. Now, with their sold-out UK tour and an upcoming tour in America, Bastille feels really lucky to have a deep connection with their fans, "to play to thousands of people on our recent UK tour was undeniably completely nuts," Dan says.

Put aside their current success, Smith explains that they're reading to go and experiment with more sonic innovation, "it's been an amazing experience for us but the goalposts always seem to change and widen. There's always the next thing to think about..."

Bad Blood is currently available at all major retailers.
