LP Review | Rebecca Ferguson - Freedom

Rebecca Ferguson
Freedom
Syco / RCA Records
Release date: November 29, 2013

By Shawal Ras

X Factor's alum, Rebecca Ferguson, has returned with her second effort, Freedom, a title so gloriously fitted with this album. It's a rare sight to see a former reality stars released a very good record that seems thorough and not over-produced by big producer (in this case, Simon Cowell). Ferguson is one of reality stars that shines through with her musical journey (same goes to Olly Murs, another X Factor's alumni).

Freedom is a record that was described as her way of growing up and fighting back after being lost midst her first album (Heaven) and fame. The album kicks off with 'I Hope', a huge number that symbolizes as the gate and summary of what the album is all about. Then comes a duet with John Legend titled 'Bridges' which is a very simple tune that talks about one thing that relates to us everyday: love. One track that got everyone to talk is the Whitney-esque song, 'My Best' which is one glorious song that kinda reminded me of that whole Gospel-ish that Whitney always sang during her days.

But the best track in the album is the final and title track, 'Freedom'. Ferguson's vocal sounds very fragile, restrained and mellow while belting out empowerment lyrics: "I am free. I am free. This is a sound of me. And it's the rhythm, sweet freedom."

Thoroughly, Freedom is one helluva album. I love it. Even though she's a former reality star, she didn't sound so "mainstream" to me, and that's a good thing, actually. I'll definitely gonna keep my eyes open for this gal, she got a good future heading towards her...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
