LP Review | James Blake - Overgrown

James Blake
Overgrown
Republic Records
Release date: April 5, 2013

By Shawal Ras

James Blake – the singer, not the tennis player – returns with his second full length album following the critical and commercial success of his self-titled debut in 2011. At just 24 years of age, this British electronic musician extraordinaire's minimalistic, moody and textured sounds have strong roots in R&B, soul and even folk. Overgrown is an elegant, intelligent and dreamy collection of excellent songs anchored by Blake’s rich and powerful deep voice. My favorite picks: 'Retrograde' and the title track, 'Overgrown'.

UPDATE: Overgrown won the Mercury Prize Award for album of the year.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
