Music Video Review | Sam Smith - Lay Me Down

Sam Smith
Lay Me Down - Single
Capitol / Method
Release date: February 15, 2015 (Single) / February 5, 2015 (Music Video)

Gosh so many feels don't even know where to begin. But as slavedriver Shawal Ras says, “You better work b*tch.”

Okay that's as funny as this gets. Sombre songster Sam Smith continues to dish out soap water right into our eyes with the re-recorded version of his first ever single 'Lay Me Down' before he blew up with 'Money On My Mind'. Presumably the final single to wrap up the In The Lonely Hour era, I can't help but be disappointed that 'Told You Now' wasn't released as a single to end it with a bang. But if the re-release is any indication, it is clear that this song holds a dear place in Sam's heart and as such deserves an endearing video treatment too.

The video begins with the crooner looking devastated in a place of worship in front of a large mass of black-clad people holding unwavering candles as he begins the song. Halfway through, it cuts to a scene of Sam Smith marrying another man in the same church as the crowd unabashedly cheers on in all white. The third and final scene is of the soulful singer sitting alone in the pews of the church as he ends the beautiful song. Presented in reverse chronology, the video does not only show a man's life from the beginning to it's tragic end but also a metaphorical course of a relationship. The video comes mere weeks after Sam's own shocking loss of his ex-boyfriend Jonathan, whom he met on the set of 'Like I Can' music video.

To cap it off, Sam's message accompanying his music video post on Facebook:

“Dear All, Here is the Link to the LAY ME DOWN music video. This song holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all x”

We wish the hapless romantic nothing but the best of luck in his love life.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
