LP Review | Selena Gomez - Stars Dance

Selena Gomez
Stars Dance
Hollywood Records
Release date: July 19, 2013

Former Disney's star (and Justin Bieber's former lover), Selena Gomez, has released her very own solo album, Stars Dance, after announcing a hiatus-and-go-solo break from her band, Selena Gomez and the Scene. Previously, she was known for her pop rock hits such as 'Naturally', 'Who Says' and her biggest hit then, 'Love You Like A Song'.

Thematically, Stars Dance is a pop album with a little mixture of Hindi-inspired tunes and electronica. Standout tracks from this record are the first single, 'Come and Get It', 'Slow Down', 'Birthday' and my favorite, 'Stars Dance'.

The good news: the album doesn't incorporate too much EDM unlike most of CDs available in the market this season (ARTPOP, anyone?). Bad news? Well, this record could use more catchy pop songs that suit Gomez's vocal - other than 'Come and Get It', is there any other track worthy as a single? Uh huh, don't think so.

Thoroughly, Stars Dance sounds a lot like Gwen Stefani's debut solo, Love.Angel.Music.Baby. Don't believe me? Checkout 'Birthday' 'cos it sounds a lot like 'Hollaback Girl' minus the "this my sh*t" verse.

So, what's the verdict? Stars Dance is a yes from me! Despite the typical boring pop stuffs in this record, there are still good tracks that'll definitely get your grooves on. But don't expect it to be the same as her previous materials with the Scene.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

UPDATE: Selena Gomez has official cancelled the remainder of her Stars Dance World Tour, including the January 2014 date for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sad? Yes it is.
