EP Review | Alessia Cara - Four Pink Walls

Alessia Cara
Four Pink Walls - EP
Def Jam
Release date: August 26, 2015

Four Pink Walls is def one of this year’s best extended plays released.

This EP, released last August alongside Troye Sivan’s WILD (yet another successful release), is a mixture of Joss Stone meets Amy Winehouse, with a hint of that outsider feel. It’s a rad mix if I’m being totally honest. In another word: it’s damn good.

Alessia Caracciolo is a 19-year-old Canadian who achieved mainstream popularity after her anthem for every introverts ‘Here’ broke every mainstream chart out there. Needless to say, the song (and Cara) certainly got my attention.

Every track here is a possible hit single. The EP opens with the joyous ‘Seventeen’ that got this whole big drums alongside handclap and vocal loop while Cara sings about being nagged by her parents and told to stay grounded. Then came ‘Here’, which I’ve mentioned above, sees Cara being a pessimist in a totally normal party scene for a young adult. It’s a rite of passage that annoys some people, I guess, me included.

The next three tracks consist of retro-esque Cara in her Motown mood (‘Outlaws’), not-so flirtatious gal (‘I’m Yours’), and it ends with the title track, a neo soul biographical bop about her life prior to her big break.

After listening to this EP for about a million times, I’m stoked for her full-length debut album. Cara definitely knows how to craft songs and it shows in this collection. Four Pink Walls is a wholesome introductory chapter for this gal and I’m sure we’ll be seeing her first #1 in the near future.
