Music Video Review | Hailee Steinfeld - Love Myself

Hailee Steinfeld

Republic
Release date: August 7, 2015 (Single) / August 14, 2015 (Music Video)

What is up with young artists trying so hard to break free of their "good girl" image? The latest one to join the queue is none other than rising pop star Hailee Steinfeld.

Fresh off the enermous success of Pitch Perfect 2, the budding songstress released a masturbation anthem disguised as a self-empowerment track (which I guess is the same thing?) and last week unveiled its NYC-shot, very urban emvee.

Albeit being an inspiring video featuring extras dancing in front of a two-way mirror recording them a la How Do I Look, while they record themselves with their smartphones, the whole message feels lost no thanks to the awkward lyrics. Directed by my favourite Hannah Lux Davis, the video also features Hailee in various urban outfits (including one which says “Self Service”), dancing around the city with her squad, owning the city. Hopefully she doesn't follow an archaic formula and go all ballad on us for her next single.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars.
