Despite looking like a night market bootleg - no cover art and album booklet (major losing point for him!) - Kanye West's Yeezus sits proudly on the throne, selling 327,000 copies in the first week and debuting at number one of the Billboard Top 200 albums.
Mr Kim Kardashian's new pet project created so much hype that whatever anti-corporate vitriol ('New Slaves') and pompous zingers ('I am a God') the hip hop juggernaut hurls, will be lapped up like grape soda after one very salty fried chicken.
In the past, hip hop artists were lauded for their point of view as an oppressed group. Since then, the macho posturing has gotten quite stale.
Truth be told, Yeezus is a stripped down electronic album more coherent than Jay-Z's Magna Carta... Holy Grail, and maintains its hip hop credibility with the arrogant rapper's lyrical boasting - proving also, once again, that synthesizers are absolutely necessary to sell records in this sagging industry.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.
