Single Review | Melanie Martinez - Sippy Cup

Melanie Martinez
Sippy Cup - Single
Atlantic
Release date: July 31, 2015 (Single)

Former contestant of The Voice, Melanie Martinez, takes creepy to the next level with her new single.

‘Sippy Cup’, the latest off Cry Baby, is a song that tells a story about having a dark skeleton from your past: “Kids are still depressed when you dress them up, and syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup,” Martinez sings coyly against the twisted lyric.

Sonically, I’d say this track falls under electric pop. I love the fact that the rhythm and Martinez’s voice is contradicting the lyrics of the song and it’s pretty cool, to be honest.

This is no bubblegum pop, ladies and gentlemen, but geared indirectly towards alternative, a movement started by many new artists in the last few years, notable Lorde (remember Grammy where they put her in rock? LOL).

Oh, checkout the music video below ‘cos she plays a cute girl, but dead! - double the eerie!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
