The male equivalent to Meghan Trainor's doo-wop sound, Charlie Puth, has debuted his first four-track EP yesterday and it is pretty OK.
2015 so far has been a pretty crazy ride for the 23 year old crooner. Relatively new to the industry, Puth sang beside Wiz Khalifa in the recent no.1 hit, 'See You Again', which sold about 500,000 copies in one week.
Pretty great, aight?
Anyway, this EP, titled Some Type of Love, is pretty great. The record kicks off with 'I Won't Tell A Soul', a retro-soul gem about asking a gal to dump her boyfriend and takes off with him. I can imagine seeing him singing the song to a girl while she's looking over the verandah.
I ain't sorry for my very vivid imaginative mind. Haha.
Following the cool track is the first single off this record, 'Marvin Gaye', a Motown-inspired pop song he recorded with Miss Trainor. The song is one of those songs where you instantly hum to it 'cos it is so damn memorable.
The other great song off this EP is 'Suffer'. This slow song shows Puth's falsetto in a perfect way and I kinda like it. It isn't good as the first two tracks but y'know what, I don't mind listening to it over and over and over.
But, the title track is not that good tho. 'Some Type of Love' is so boring and it is the only track in this CD that sounds so normal. Where is that Motown continuation? This sound messes the flow of the album, TBH.
Anyway. This EP is a great introduction to this soulful guy. I'm not sure when he'll release his full-length album but I'm sure it'll be this year. Around Christmas season, perhaps? It'll fit pretty well.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
