Shut Up and Dance - Single
RCA
Release date: September 10, 2014 (Single) / October 23, 2014 (Music Video)
WALK THE MOON have walked the slighted realms of independent music long enough and may just finally make the crossover to mainstream radios with their latest feet-thumping indie-pop single 'Shut Up and Dance'. Well, let's get to it then.
The poppy, art-rock quartet, whose name is derived from the song 'Walking on the Moon' by The Police, released the giddy dance anthem as the lead single from their upcoming LP titled Talking is Hard. The single officially marks the bands new direction with their sound and could very well put them high up in the charts (the ones that matter anyway). With a loud, raucously fun chorus reminiscent of the outfit's first ever single 'Anna Sun', which was named after their college professor, the track is clearly inspired by the rock sound of the 80s, done over soaring electronic guitar melodies and retro synth.
A whimsical love affair on the dance floor, the video perfectly reflects the 80s inspiration of the single. Featuring characters that look straight off a movie of that era, the lead singer Nicholas Petricca meets the girl of his dreams who immediately puts him at ease by asking him to do nothing but “Shut up and dance with me”. The pop spirit of the monstrous chorus is not at all lost in the video, rather fully translated in all its glory via quick dance steps and magnified expressions. Albeit appearing to be an updated, rock version of 1984 Footloose, the band still managed to keep it funky with colourful, cartoonish art while our hero and the sneaker-rocking girl continued to do some damage to the disco.
In the end, it doesn't matter if this radio hit manages to climb the charts or not, for it definitely will call the listeners to do exactly what it wants to.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
