I'm Not the Only One - Single
Capitol
Release date: August 31, 2014 (Single) / August 1, 2014 (Music Video)
Sam Smith carries on with his mission to break our hearts one crack at a time with his latest soul-wrencher, ‘I’m Not The Only One’ starring Glee darling Dianna Agron and Mindy’s beau Chris Messina.
Directed by Luke Monaghan, the same visionary who gave us the previously-reviewed ‘Leave Your Lover’, the music video sees Dianna playing a traditional suburban housewife keeping the household together the best she can while her better half, the cheating Chris goes out to, well, cheat on her with an unknown lady (we wish she was another renowned actress as well) in a nearby bar. The video slowly unfolds one painful scene at a time, with Sam’s melancholic falsetto providing it the perfect backdrop.
Set in the Mad Men era, Dianna looks absolutely stunning as a prim married woman of that period who is grief-stricken by her husband’s infidelity yet torn because of her love for him and the suburban need of that time to maintain a happy façade of a marriage. She agonizingly fights her inner demons – while gulping down cheap alcohol in the middle of the store, driving aimlessly and burning his clothes – only to take the two-timer back at the end of the day as he comes back from ‘work’.
Note: we didn’t get why he doesn’t have a car or why he was walking in the middle of the road either.
Chris comes across as nothing but a complete douchebag – which means he has done his job perfectly. As much as Dianna tries to leave him (by setting fire to his suits and trying to take off the wedding ring) she couldn’t pull through and after sitting through her many excruciating sobs it is not hard for us to see her authentic love for him.
It may be a Sam Smith music video but its real star is undeniably Dianna Agron.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
