Music Video Review | Charli XCX - Break the Rules

Charli XCX
Break the Rules - Single
Asylum / Atlantic / Neon Gold
Release date: October 12, 2014 (Single) / August 25, 2014 (Music Video)

Charli XCX just got a whole lot more interesting!

Instead of being obscure like her previous album, Ms. Charlotte Emma Aitchison decided to embrace her inner pop bad girl sassiness (i.e. the one in 'Fancy') for her upcoming LP titled Sucker.

The first single off this record, 'Break the Rules' (FYI: 'Boom Clap' does not count), is all about that bitchiness we all got back when we were in high school. Basically it is a song about discovering yourself while being young and reckless.

Anyway. The video is the real deal here.

'Break the Rules' is the opposite of what we've seen in 'Fancy'. Charli is much more of a rebel here. She's a messed up lolita with friends who think slutty dress is da fab and she rolls with 'em in a school bus with a driver that looks like Otto from the Simpsons, and yea, the prom chaperone is the former bad girl herself, Rose McGowan (Jawbreaker, anyone?).

It's a fun video, what's not to love!

Kudos to the director for this perfect throwback of the 80's teens. Kids nowadays are busy with their smartphones they thought slutty camwhoring is some kind of rebellion. Pfft. Get some cue from your mother, lassie!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
