Music Video Review | Ariana Grande - Break Free (feat. Zedd)

Ariana Grande
Break Free (feat. Zedd) - Single
Republic
Release date: July 3, 2014 (Single) / August 12, 2014 (Music Video)

Ariana's video for her club-banger is now out but unfortunately she has yet to 'Break Free' from her go-to MV tropes.

The trippy video begins with a Star Wars-esque intro scroll of fluff before cutting to Ariana freeing her caged Arianators from the clutches of alien frogs, robots and bearded humanoids to end the whole ordeal by partying in a spaceship with Zedd. This pairing of the futuristic EDM sound of the single with a campy plot concept is so wacky it might just be genius. Besides, the video could also help the song ride the monstrous success of The Guardians of the Galaxy to further climb up the charts.

Aside from the basic plot, the video also heavily features various other Ariana randomness, including shots of her floating in anti-gravity while side-profiling the camera (die position, die), breaking free from her clothes and of course rockets shooting out of her bosom a la Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. To be truthful, we couldn't wait for the video to cut to its party scene the moment the captive alien/obvious dancers were freed.  The two blond young thangs from 'Problem' make another appearance here, arguably saving the spaceship dance party at the end.

Touted a gay anthem since it's release, 'Break Free' is heavily inspired by various sci-fis of bygone era while still relaying its message: to always be true to yourself. To further solidify her theme, the video even features an alien gay love. Awww. If her recent spat with her brother Frankie Grande's hater on Instagram isn't enough to make her a gay icon, perhaps this video will.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
