LP Review | Jamie Scott & The Town - Park Bench Theories

Jamie Scott & The Town
Park Bench Theories
Polydor
Release date: October 5, 2007

By Shawal Ras

Back in 2007, I was just done with my SPM days (it's our school system's nationwide final exam, some kind of SATs if you're in USA), and I discovered this song called 'When Will I See Your Face Again' and I fell in love with the laid-back singing style. I saw this album reviewed in a couple of local magazines and decided to look for it, but failed. So, naturally, after a few months, I already forgot about it.

Single Review | Ed Sheeran - Sing

Ed Sheeran
Sing - Single
Warner Music UK
Release date: April 25, 2014

Ed Sheeran is channeling his inner Timberlake-esque singing style and I AM LOVING IT! I am so used to listening to Sheeran's soft voice and I bet everyone is super stoked to hear him singing a very up tempo number like this one.

Single Review | Clean Bandit - Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne)

Clean Bandit
Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne) – Single
Warner / Big Beat / Atlantic
Release date: January 17, 2014

They say it's better late than never and we can't agree more how it rings true to this long overdue review of the number one hit 'Rather Be', an infectious romantic number released back in January by Clean Bandit, the English electronic quartet with a corporeally-spotless-yet-morally-ambigious name.

Single Review | The Chainsmokers - #SELFIE

The Chainsmokers
#SELFIE - Single
Dim Mak Records
Release date: January 28, 2014

There's a song been going around the internet today and it is insane! #SELFIE is a song by American DJ duo, The Chainsmokers (Andrew Taggart & Alen Pall), and the song is pretty sick (I don't wanna admit it, but the beat is seriously embedded in my brain already).

Using a demo of a female clubber who gossips (and they talk about how to take a good selfie), they create a hypnotizing EDM beat on it and it became popular all over SoundCloud (it's a viral, indeed). Honestly, I love the monologue part of this song because it is so on point. Plus, "let me take a selfie" line is a really nice touch before the chorus/beat hits.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Single Review | Viktor Király - Running Out of Time (feat. DMC)

Viktor Király
Running Out of Time (feat. DMC) (Radio Version) - Single
King Music Management Kft.
Release date: January 6, 2014

Hungarian pop singer, Viktor Király, debuted his first single, 'Running Out of Time', early this year and it has been getting pretty decent radio airplay around Europe. According to some of my sources, he tried to enter this year's edition of Eurovision Song Contest with this song but lost to another song. But not to worry, you're in my radar, Király, 'cos I love this song!

'Running Out of Time' is a decent pop with a hint of subtle homage to the late 70s pop vibe. It's a very European pop gem, very different from those songs we're listening in our radio these days. It could've been a good contender for the ESC but it's not, so, yea, we'll see. Honest opinion from yours truly: Hungarian should send this song instead - at least it'll be in the Top 10, y'know.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Music Video Review | Shakira - Empire

Shakira
Empire - Single
RCA
Release date: February 24, 2014 (Single) / March 25, 2014 (Music Video)

Shakira is churning out her rock side with this awesome new track called 'Empire' for her tenth album, Shakira. Seriously, I am loving the explosive chorus and how it feels like there's her pre-mainstream tone to it (FYI: she was a very edgy rocker back then). I can't help but to agree with Idolator, this is probably her most rawdiest rock adventure by far.

'Can't Remember to Forget You' is now forgotten already (pun intended)!

The video for 'Empire' is also beautiful. The surreal-like motion when she glides through the green mountain, enters the chapel in a beautiful wedding gown, then run away for her freedom with fire blazing from her back (honestly, though: that is oh-so-fake graphic, I tell ya).

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

Single Review | Pitbull - We Are One (Ole Ola) (feat. Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte)

Pitbull
We Are One (Ole Ola) (feat. Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte) - Single
Sony Music Entertainment Brasil
Release date: April 8, 2014

By Shawal Ras

Yay, finally, the song for this year's FIFA World Cup has been released and honestly, I am loving the mainstream vibe of the song (y'know, instead of being the usual formulaic anthem song, which is always filled with cultural-slash-tribal references).

Single Review | Foals - Hummer

Foals
Hummer - Single
Transgressive
Release date: March 12, 2007

To merely say that we’re still reeling from Foals’ incredible concert two weeks ago will undeniably be the understatement of the year. The prodigious English band almost brought the house (i.e. Upfront) down as the place was filled to the brim with both diehard fans and curious souls who came to see what the real deal is with this group named after baby horses. Their electrifying and energetic performance filled the arena with their distinct euphoric sound of rock, techno and funk.

One of the most significant tracks by Foals is none than the indecipherable ‘Hummer’ – the song with a title that does not appear in its lyrics at all. A favourite among fans since the beginning, it gained mainstream acclaim when it was featured in a phenomenal drug-fuelled rave in the controversial British TV series Skins, instantly elevating the scene and the show in general to an unforgettable rank in the history of television.

A math rock and dance punk infused track, ‘Hummer’ is not heavy on the ears of a non-rock listener while being repetitive enough to be instantly catchy. Although the song was initially released as a non-album single, its fiery reception immediately cemented its position in the later editions of the Foals’ debut album Antidotes.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
